We’re very happy to connect with you again! we today jump back on the cocktail subject, to show you a trick or two, on how I happened to break the rules of the classic “Espresso Martini” very famous after dinner and “anytime pick-me up” cocktail, and as often happen here on this website, I have twisted it with healthy and reasonable smart ingredients! some of these creations have been twisted and used in the past from myself while I was head bartender at one famous cocktail bar in London, being this cocktail the best seller for more than two years, after a challenge with the team, to start educating the guests on a different way of drinking the espresso martini, classic, good, but easy to make by anyone out there! Passion for cocktails, all because of my grandad.
My grandad name was Domenico. in this photo he looked like I will appear at the mirror when I will turn sixty, and I hope to be as good as him. He had a profound deep smile, his hands were massive, he could grab everyone’s sins and pains and he would gently turn that pain in a smile with his caresses. Back in the nineties he was a regular coffee lover, alongside with a couple of cigarettes each morning, and a jolly good shot of his loved brandy or whatever amaro he had on his cabinet after lunch time. It has been a fancy creative childhood for me, my learning process started there; just sitting next to him and staring at him while gently opening a bottle, pouring liquors in ruined yellowish-labels like MARTINI or FERNET BRANCA, through vintage thin good looking glassware belonged to his mum years before..
This is pretty much the story of me and him bartending, I can say that I started making drinks before anyone of you, Probably I started back in 1992 when I was only three. and he taught me mixing my morning coffee with honey!
Today, I’d like to dedycated this tasty boozy one to him.
Grandad did know very well that his three-years-old-nipper couldn’t drink coffee or any caffeine or alcool, so he ran to his loyal groceries shop to buy Barley coffee, which is nothing less than an herbal, grassy and have a less shocking sensation of caffeine-less beverage, that magically when mixed with some sort of sweetener, he had loads of honey locally produced … it happens to be the healthiest black drinking alternative to coffee for young kids, and believe it or not it is considered today a SUPERFOOD! how much magic there was in our spare afternoon time. Back in time and now again, the “Orzoro” producers make the “Moka” version, to be prepared as usually we do for our coffee moKa! and there is also an “instant powder” version of barley coffee mixed with Chicory . my most favourite sweetener is no-longer honey but Bee Pollen, While honey contains all the sugars that bees need, bee pollen provides them with a high source of proteins, vitamins, minerals and amino acids for nourishment.
Both cocktails we will now show in the photos taken by Marcella, will feature caffeine free alternatives, sweetened with bee pollen and kicked up by a gentle dose of Amaro Sibilia, one of my Gran favourites herbal spirits, made by locally sourced central Italy herbs spices and plants.
