We cannot believe a world of storytelling, without an exchange of tales… This article was for a very long time tested and worked out the best way we could, with our friend Dario, that accepted very Kindly to share with us his emotions after an emotional trip, he is a great bartender, he loves talking and hosting, you can check his profile here!
A trip on the road, literally diving in the deep cuban traditions!! two weeks discovering Havana, Vinales, Cienfuegos and Trinidad discovery how these marvellous folks do translate my favourite topic, hospitality.
A mixed show featuring Music, Dance, crazy Kitchen style, Tobacco and obviously, the inevitable one!! rum!
We went for the most economic way, but certainly that unique one that let you see real people in their real place, behaving in their real world, truly donating you the real sense of friendship, typical of people born here!
“Las Casas particulares”.
Cuban folks enjoy opening their doors to us tourists, offering us a inbreed sense of warmth that is just sensational and rare to find in any other part of the world. but WAIT! this is not only a service as we probably could compare to airBnB here in Europe, here you stay with locals, eating their food, at their table, watching their soul through their habits, respecting them, you notice how they love having you and make you comfortable, and this has an incredible value you can’t buy with money, you get it if you dare to travel with a bit of adventure! we notice here this is something they really do for a living, making it their only source of income. Talking to them, we understand how much care they pay to the entertained tourist. Considering that the basic salary of a dentist is of 25CUC monthly (local money) the equivalent of 20 €/£.
For many getting in contact with the tourist is the only source of profit and is really for this that the doors of many houses open and offer services like “taxi collectivo” they hand the whole possible service to the tourist.
Walking along Havana, between the Malecon and the roads of “Habana Vieja” it is easy to notice the touch left by political history, between socialism and communism, has marked her in the years. Murales of Che Guevara and essay of Fidel Castro adorn the walls of the city. In the days spent at Havana we also stopped by the museum of Havana Club Rhum.
In the following days we continued our trip towards “Pinar of the Rio” and we stopped try the town of Vinales. Small town in the heart of nature. it is here we spend the whole day with various farmers, and growers. They explain us how the workmanship of the tobacco. From the plantation of the leaves to the final job to draw the famous cuban cigar. Low leaves of the tobacco plant, defined as “bitter” therefore of low quality, are minced and used for the production of cigarettes. The top leaves, on the other hand are called “capa” are worked for months and after having being dried, ther cigar can be drawn. The sale of the tobacco and the cigars are checked by the government which holds the 90% of the final proceeds.
jumping on a horse, we move to the city of Vinales, the only way of transportation that allows us to arrive on top of the Valley of the “silencio” the “silent valley”. is just here that another farmer shows us the whole job behind the production of the coffee, of the cocoa and the rum, so many things can be done by a single man, happens only in Cuba.
As last we head to Trinidad,
UNESCO heritage city, small but it has an unbelievable charm.
we spent the last days of this trip in the garden of Rolando, an eighty years old homeowner, that will entertain us in these days in Trinidad, spends the afternoons smoking cigars and listening to its stories about the revolution, the years of government of Fidel Castro, up to those of Raul, the idea of socialism and the difficulties that the Cubans daily face. The evening finds again there in the central plaza, where the house of the music, the notes and the dances of the Cubans let you undo your seat belts, dancing at the rhythm of salsa. the atmosphere is so involving!! Rhum plays his role too, obviously!
After a long trip of two weeks we finish with sorrow this adventure. Cuba stays within you in all of her shine. Decadent and poor but at the same time thrilling and dignified. The warmth and the hospitality of its people make it still more magnificent than it already is.
